First up is:

patrickJMT

The 3 Best Math YouTube Channels that'll Save YOU From Failing Your Calculus Class!

Pro: – Great if you need a quick how to on solving the problems.

Con: – Lacking on concepts; might need to do more searching on YouTube to nail down the concepts.

Topics Covered (with respect to Calculus): Calculus I-III, Ordinary Differential Equations, Statistics with Calculus

Rating: 8 out of 10 for problem solving

4 out of 10 for concepts

10 out of 10 for time

Overall Rating: 7.33 out of 10

Access his videos here.

Let me say this about Patrick:

Patrick is tremendously great for problem solving.

He is very direct and his videos are easy to understand once you’ve nailed down the concepts.

If you watch his videos, you will definitely understand how to do a particular problem, but not every problem.

I’m going to explain this in more detail right now because there is a big flaw with Patrick’s videos that you must understand.

The problem with his videos is that he doesn’t do the concepts in great detail, which is extremely critical for understanding mathematics and, if you are ANY engineering major, it’s even more critical for mastering, and just getting by, the rest of the classes coming up in the curriculum.

In some of his videos, he might touch on them briefly and in a very short period of time. However, he does not spend enough time on the concepts in order for you to fully master the material.

In other words, not in a way in which you can know the what is it, the why is it happening, the how is it happening, and the how do you apply it parts of the concepts. In this way that I mention, you will be able to effortlessly know the process behind each problem and practice maybe one or two of each kind of problem and you are set to get an A on the test.

I will show you the guy on YouTube that can make that easy way happen later in this post. So keep reading or otherwise, you’ll be kicking yourself later in the head for not reading to the end. Guaranteed or I’ll pay 25% of your tuition next semester if it doesn’t work out. Just send me an email at evan@jointheisland.com to request the tuition payment.

The next math YouTuber for Calculus that I recommend is Krista King and that’s who I’m going to talk about next.

Krista King

The 3 Best Math YouTube Channels that'll Save YOU From Failing Your Calculus Class!

Pro: – Great for quick problem solving, has wonderful explanations that make sense and has a very friend like voice that’ll make you listen.

Con: – NO CONCEPTS!

Topics Covered (with respect to Calculus): Calculus I-III, Ordinary Differential Equations

Rating: 8 out of 10 for problem solving

0 out of 10 for concepts on the free videos (because you would have to pay for her course to get that and, if you can’t afford your textbook, this might be a good option for you at $147 per year or $27 per month which, compared to your textbook, might be the better option).

10 out of 10 for time

Overall Rating: 6 out of 10

Access her videos here.

Krista is a wonderful math instructor on YouTube.

Her videos are straightforward, they do get the problem solving aspects in line and ready for the test (assuming that you understand the concepts), and she is honestly, very pleasant to listen to. She talks like she is your friend and in a way that she genuine cares about you understanding the material.

And if you need a quick run through of a problem, I think that Krista gives better explanations than patrickJMT. I find them to be much more clear and thorough.

Having said that, the videos are incomplete from the perspective that you can solve each and every problem from just watching one video.

You still can’t do that with just her videos alone.

You need more practice and some more scrambling in order to get to that point, and hence why I give her channel an 8 instead of a 10 for problem solving.

However, if just looking at a quick problem to get you set for the test is all that you need, then she fits the bill for sure and her videos will resolve your struggle, for sure.

But not like this guy:

Professor Leonard

The 3 Best Math YouTube Channels that'll Save YOU From Failing Your Calculus Class!

Pros: – The ABSOLUTE BEST for concepts and the ABSOLUTE BEST for problem solving, will ensure you an A in your Calculus classes if you just watch his videos and listen and comprehend what he is saying and do the necessary practice after.

– You’ll become a conceptual problem solver instead of simply a memorizer as a result of watching his videos

– If you have the time, this is the only math channel that you need to succeed. Nothing else surpasses him.

Con: – You might not have the time to watch all of his content; trust me, his videos are LOOOOOOOOOOOONG.

Topics Covered (with respect to Calculus): Calculus I-III, Ordinary Differential Equations (he’s working on the series)

Rating : 10 out of 10 for problem solving

10 out of 10 for concepts

If you have the time to watch his 2-3.5 hour videos: 10 out of 10 for time

If you DON’T have the time to watch his 2-3.5 hour videos: 3 out of 10 for time (not a knock on him though; he’s fixing this)

Overall Rating: 10 out of 10

Access his videos here.

If there is one word that describes this man, it would be life changer.

Not only did his videos get me A’s in all of my calculus classes, but he turned me from being a memorizer into a conceptual thinker and a problem solver.

And this has been the foundation of my success in my engineering classes at my university.

As a result of Professor Leonard’s videos, I now see everything from a conceptual process of knowing what something actually is, why it’s working, how it works, and how I can use that information to solve a problem, not just math problems.

And that is the essence of problem solving and the framework for thinking like an engineer.

And if you are in engineering, that problem solving framework is extremely critical to develop in order to succeed in future classes like Dynamics.

By the way, if you are taking Dynamics or you are going to take Dynamics, I have a post that walks you through the bullet proof method for passing and acing that class, so click here to read that if that’s you.

Yes, his videos are 2-3.5 hours long and they can consume your day. In fact, if that is too inconvenient for you, then patrickJMT and Krista King would be your answers to at least something within the short timeframe that you have.

However, if you have the time to watch those videos and if you just do what he says and really pay attention to what he is doing and what he tries to tell you, then you are going to get A’s in all of your calculus classes guaranteed.

I mean take a look here at his reviews on Rate my Professor. They’re amazing! And that’s an UNDERSTATEMENT!

You would have to try to fail if you watch his videos.

I dare you to watch one of his videos and come back and tell me that you weren’t MIND BLOWN.

Comment below with you reaction from those videos. You can start watching one of them here for Calculus I, here for Calculus II, and here for Calculus III.

With all of that being said, Professor Leonard’s videos on YouTube are HANDS DOWN my #1 recommended resource for learning calculus for your classes.

They are the most comprehensive videos covering all of the concepts in each of the classes and every problem solving technique that you can use for those classes without getting confused as to why they work.

They are the world’s best resource for learning calculus.

A Secret Trick to Ensuring an A (most students don’t do this, but would fix their problems if they did)

The 3 Best Math YouTube Channels that'll Save YOU From Failing Your Calculus Class!

Now unfortunately, I could not use Professor Leonard for Differential Equations when I took it since he didn’t make videos covering the entire subject.

Fortunately, I got clever and I used a resource that almost every student forgets to use from time to time, but knows deep down that they should.

Do you wanna know what that resource is?

The textbook.

“What? They’re crazy expensive!”

That’s true for a lot of people, but I happened to have gotten a scholarship to pay for all of the books (and the entire tuition and housing and food, etc., but I’ll tell you about that in another post), so I had the equipment to use this to my advantage.

You see, the textbook, at least a good one, lays down everything that you need to know for what you have to do (however, I do acknowledge Professor Leonard for giving me the foundation to go learn from the textbook; otherwise, I would’ve struggled a lot).

It explains to you the concepts and it tells you why they work and how they are used to solve a problem.

In all honesty, that’s how the college classes work, not by looking up random YouTube videos.

And believe it or not, professors pull almost everything that they do from making tests and quizzes from the textbooks.

So just with that in mind, you are better off reading it than not.

Because if you read it in full and understand everything that is happening there, you are guaranteed to solve every problem in it and you are guaranteed to get an A in the class.

And that really is a hidden trick.

Tell me, what percentage of people in your class are actually reading the textbook and not just heading off to YouTube looking for answers? Comment below with that answer. I’d really like to know.

And PLEASE don’t spend the big bucks on a tutor!

I double dare you!

And now I am REALLY going to save your life because I’ve got the blueprint for your Calculus success right here that you can follow and ensure your A (and at least pass, like, if you follow this, you really can’t fail)!

Your Failproof Calculus Class Success Blueprint

The 3 Best Math YouTube Channels that'll Save YOU From Failing Your Calculus Class!

So, for every calculus class that you take, and every math class really, these are the steps that you can follow to ensure your success in relatively little to no time at all:

Step 0: Go to class.

Please. Go to class. Even watching Professor Leonard is still NO EXCUSE for skipping class. Skipping class will do you more harm than good, so don’t skip it.

Step 1: Watch any Professor Leonard video that covers your topic

This is the very first step. His video explanations ARE superior to your textbook and if he has videos on your topic, you must watch his videos FIRST before moving on to any other resource.

If he is NOT available for your topic, you will proceed directly to step 2, which is this:

Step 2: Read your textbook

The textbook is guaranteed to give you everything that you need to understand the material and to do the problems seamlessly come test time. So if you read it and do the problems in it, you are good to go and you should have no problem passing the class and no problem getting an A in the class.

If the book isn’t very good or you are having a hard time understanding it, then go to step 3, which is this:

Step 3: Watch a Krista King video on your topic.

Like I said, I happen to believe from experience that her explanations are better and more clear than patrickJMT, so I would watch her videos first before going to patrickJMT.

And if she doesn’t have a video on your topic or her video doesn’t cut it in helping you understand the topic, then do this:

Step 4: Watch a patrickJMT video on your topic.

This is for sure the step 4 to take. His explanations are going to be very good and it will get the job done for you in terms of solving a problem quickly. BUT, his videos are not enough to understand the concepts with respect to your topic and to REALLY solve the problems.

And if patrickJMT doesn’t cut it, than do this:

Step 5: Find another resource and go to your professor’s office hours.

Other resources include Paul’s Online Math Notes (very good for a written resource by the way if the book isn’t good), and your LA.

Now you might be saying “Why not Khan Academy or MITOpenCourseWare?”

To that I say this:

I can’t speak on MITOpenCourseWare and Khan Academy since I haven’t used them as resources for calculus, so I would suggest that if you want to explore using them, you try them out yourself and see if they help you out more than the other resources that I mentioned. Like I said, I will only write about resources that I have had direct experience with and have gotten results from.

You can access the Khan Academy series for Calculus here and many MITOpenCourseWare series for Calculus here if you are interested in them.

That’s It! You’re Rock Solid!
